Description
A movie film originally donated in 16mm format, this film was preserved and digitized for the Hunterdon County Historical Society by The Media Preserve, Inc. through a gift from Debra Hoskins.
The film was produced as a home movie presumably by Col. Arthur Foran and his family, somewhere in the decade of the 1920's, and then jumping forward to the 1940's. It has a run time in remastered form of 15 minutes and 56 seconds. The film is clearly spliced in several locations and is asynchronous in its chronology. The digitized version of the film is maintained as a media asset in the HCHS Archives, and access must be requested in advance or viewing. To view the film, please contact the librarian for assistance.
The film opens with a panoramic view of a pillared home on an estate (The Elms). The scene shifts to a vignette with a German Shepherd dog (Old Jack). There is a brief view of trees after an ice storm, and then a boy (Walt) playing fireman with a costume and toy truck and uniform. An older boy (Jimmy) comes out to play with the dog, then a woman makes a brief appearance in a house coat. The scene shifts again, and the younger boy (Walt) is playing with Old Jack and a new dog - Glenny Dog. There are multiple scenes picturing Walt in various locations.
The scene shifts to summer, where two boys (Jimmy and Walter) are swimming and horsing around in a pond (the Upper Lake). The scene is spliced again back to the ice storm, with a beautiful view of the estate (The Elms) covered in a glistening ice storm. The younger boy (Walt) again has a scene. The scene shifts and children (Walt and Grat) are performing a play about Betsy Ross and George Washington. An older woman and a man make brief appearances (Mom? Father?). This is followed by a scene of boys (Walter, Jim, and someone named Paul Axtell) playing at the beach.
After this, the film is spliced again, into a color segment. A man in Military uniform with buddies in uniform (Walt and friends) are in front of a house on a lawn. It is a formal occasion - people are wearing suits, dresses, and some attire is formal. It is a wedding - the wedding of Walter and Ann. There are scenes of Walter and Pop; Walter and Ann; Walter, Ann and Pop; Mother; Pat and Mike; Walt and Ann at Elms after the wedding; and Jack Morris. The couple drives away after the wedding, and then reappears on the porch of the Elms - the end of the film.

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.

The possession of a reproduction of HCHS collection materials and the payment of associated reproduction service fees, does not constitute or imply permission to publish or exhibit. It is necessary for researchers to obtain separate, written permission for the publication or exhibition of all material held in the HCHS collections. All licenses are for one use only and each additional instance of use must be separately requested in writing. Usage rights fees, above and beyond reproduction costs, may apply and vary depending on whether a reproduction is for an individual, non-profit, or commercial institution and how it will be used (personal research, publication, exhibition, etc.). All reproductions must credit the Hunterdon County Historical Society as the source of the image or document.
