Asher Stryker Photograph Collection

Title

Asher Stryker Photograph Collection

Subject

This collection is comprised of a large number of photographic images taken by amateur photographer Asher Stryker of Flemington, NJ. The images date primarily from ca. 1895 to 1910.

The bulk of the collection includes over 1,200 glass plate negative photographs. While there is some duplication, most of the images are unique. The images are largely taken from around the Flemington, NJ area, although there are some photographs from neighboring towns in Hunterdon County, as well as from other areas of the state of NJ. The subject matter is very broad. Mr. Stryker enjoyed photographing the houses and other buildings in the town of Flemington. He also enjoyed photographing farms, churches, and schools. He particularly enjoyed pastoral scenes, capturing rivers, streams, woods, and farmlands.

His images also feature events. There are sections of the collection that cover the annual Women's Carnival in Flemington and the annual Firemen's Parade, as well as other local events. He also captured the people of the town, in portraits, on horses and in the early days of the automobile. In addition to the glass plates, there are also four photograph albums of prints developed out from the glass plates, as well as some regular film negative images.

This collection is extremely important because it is a valuable source of documentary imagery for the town and people of Flemington NJ and the surrounding area of Hunterdon County for around the turn of the 19th to the 20th century.

Asher Rowe Stryker was born on September 28, 1877, in Three Bridges, N.J. He married Elizabeth "Bessie" Barrass on June 16, 1904 in Flemington, N.J. They had two children: Richard Kenneth and Mary Jean.

Mr. Stryker is mostly remembered in the Flemington, NJ area for operating a variety store at 130 Main Street. The store opened in 1928 and remained in business through the early 1950s.

He died on September 1, 1956, age 78, at the New Jersey Firemen's Home in Boonton, N.J. He and his wife are interred in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Flemington.

Description

The collection is comprised of 52 boxes of glass plate negatives, numbered from 1 through 1,268.

The collection also contains a box of regular film print negatives of varying sizes, as well as three boxes of modern developed out prints.
